Coziness Revisited
by Barbara Beckley
Orbit In: Open since February, the Orbit In transports clients back to the 1950s with mid-century furniture and décor. The beautifully restored inn, which was built in 1957, has nine guest rooms around a sunny pool. The hilltop home of 50’s design icon Albert Frey is visible from the pool. Each guest room has a bathroom with the property’s original pink tile, with a pink sink and toilet; and some have full kitchenettes with the original white cupboards stocked with vintage Melmac dinnerware. The nightly free cocktail hour at the poolside Boomerang Bar has become so hip that residents are asking if it is open to the public. (So far, it’s for guests only.)
The hotel is located in Palm Springs’ Tennis Club district, and many popular restaurants, night spots and shops are within walking distance. Guest room amenities include robes, in-room data ports and VCRs. DLS modems are also attached to the lava lamps at the bar. Free bicycles, and outdoor whirlpool spa and daily continental breakfast add to the pleasure. For guests who are fans of the mid-20th century, watching the ’50s movie Palm Springs Weekend (free from the video library) while lounging in a womb chair in the Rat Pack Suite is as good as it gets.
