The Orbit In
When Christy Eugenis opened her 10 room hotel in March, she burnished the complex with a retro hip-ness that befits its mid-century Herbert W. Burns design. The atomic cool vibe is established at the gate: Frank Sinatra is crooning from the poolside stereo, and an Arnold Palmer (iced tea and lemonade) is waiting for the weary traveler. The Orbit stays faithful to myriad facets of modernism: Ray Eames’ textiles anchor the valances, Harry Beroia’s diamond chairs dot the rooms, and Melmac dishware fills the kitchenettes. You may be tempted to spend hours dipping aperitifs in the Frey Lounge and browse through the game closet for apt diversions like Jachquline Susann novels. For those who can’t unplug from the 21st century, fear not: There are DSL hookups in the rooms as well as on the lava lamps at the Boomerang Bar. And if you insist on making the earth move offsite, call Desert Adventures (they’ll pick you up) and book a guided tour along the San Andreas fault.
